Our Story
We are Mike Chenault & Kevin Engel.
Since 1985, agriculture has been at the heart of the Engel’s family's story. What began as a grain farming operation has grown into a vital part of the regional food supply chain, producing corn, soybeans, wheat, and rye that help feed poultry and livestock markets throughout Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina. Their grain supports everything from turkey growers in the Shenandoah Valley to major producers like Perdue and Smithfield Foods. They also provide grains for local distilleries: Ragged Branch and Three Crosses.
Mike and Kevin have realized Hanover County is uniquely positioned with a rich variety of farmers and growers producing everything from grains to fresh vegetables. This diversity creates a special opportunity to connect consumers directly with the people who grow their food. Today, more than ever, families want to know where their food comes from, how it is grown, and who is producing it. Building that connection is important not only for consumers, but for the farmers who work hard to provide good, clean food that supports healthy communities.
One of Hanover Market’s greatest passions is agricultural education. By giving children hands-on experiences with farming, they gain knowledge about food production, stewardship, and agriculture that they can carry with them into adulthood and eventually share with future generations. It creates a ripple effect of understanding—helping people appreciate where their food comes from and the work that goes into producing it.
Mike states “I want the kids to say.. Mom, let’s go to the market!!” The farm serves as a gathering place for families and the community. It offers an opportunity to slow down, spend time together, and enjoy the outdoors. As the market and farm experiences continue to grow, visitors are encouraged to be part of the journey. Building a thriving community destination takes time, patience, and continued development, but the vision remains focused on creating a place where families can make lasting memories together!
One of the most beloved attractions of the Engle’s farm is 38 acres of sunflowers. While open spaces and scenic views may be an everyday part of farm life, seeing the wonder and excitement on visitors' faces offers a powerful reminder of how meaningful these experiences can be. The sunflower fields provide an opportunity to step away from the busyness of everyday life, appreciate the beauty of God's creation, and simply enjoy being outdoors. Mike has a mission to do this on a smaller scale right at The Hanover Market- so stay tuned for bright yellow blooms!
Throughout the season, guests can also explore various types of farm equipment, learn about modern farming practices, and enjoy interactive educational opportunities designed especially for youth. Children have the chance to climb into the operator's seat of farm machinery, experience agriculture up close, and learn firsthand how the equipment helps farmers produce the food we rely on every day. Visitors may also encounter a variety of farm animals, creating even more opportunities for learning and connection.
At its core, Mike & Kevin’s mission is simple: to provide good, clean food, educate future generations, and create a welcoming place where families can gather, learn, and experience the beauty and importance of agriculture together.
